Holiday Shopping Tips for Consumers

November 26th, 2010 by Amanda Filed under: Blog | Comment (0)

The holiday shopping season can be challenging as we all try to set and/or stick to our annual budgets.  Don’t let 10 months of careful planning and spending go to waste in the final six weeks of the year.  Consider the following tips to help you stay on track:

  • Include everything when budgeting.  One of the easiest ways to bust your budget is to fail to acknowledge the soft costs of shopping like parking, lunch at the mall, babysitting, gift-wrapping, etc.  Receipts and records from last year can be a great place to start.  Remember, it’s better to overestimate than underestimate.
  • Write it down.  It’s not really a budget until it’s on paper.  Having it on paper provides a way to measure your success and keeps you on task.  Post it in a place for everyone in your family to see and chart your progress.
  • Consolidate your cards if making purchases on credit.  Spreading purchases across multiple cards makes it more difficult to track expenses and maintain your budget.  When using credit, think of it as a short-term loan and select the card with the lowest interest or the one that provides reward points.

Holiday Eating

November 22nd, 2010 by Amanda Filed under: Blog | Comment (0)

The holiday season might not be the time to lose weight, but that doesn’t mean throw caution to the wind. Have a plan! Here are 8 tips to help you succeed this holiday season.

1.) There will be poor choices at every party. Plan ahead. Have healthy snack before you go to fill you up, and then choose only your favorites when you get there.

2.) Don’t inform people you’re “eating healthy this holiday season.” They may tempt you!

3.) Eat the fruits, vegetables and low calorie foods first.

4.) Try cooking lighter recipes. Just don’t want to tell your guest!

5.) If you’re not cooking, offer to bring a dish you can eat without the guilt.

6.) Moderate your alcohol intake during the holidays.

7.) If at first you don’t succeed, don’t throw in the towel. One mistake doesn’t blow the entire day!

8.) Get your exercise. It will help burn off those mistakes!

Overall, remember the meaning of the holidays and that they can be enjoyed without indulging in mass quantities of food. Have a little but be strong. What takes 3 minutes to eat likely takes 30 minutes to work off!
